It Starts At The Core
One of the most significant advances in athletic conditioning has been recognizing the role the core muscles play in enhancing sport specific movement. The “core” refers to your gluteal (butt), abdominal, hip and low back muscles. The interaction of these muscles during movement stabilizes your body so the other muscles of your body can function optimally.

There are many methods to strengthen your core muscles. Among the best, is a system of exercise called Pilates. All the movements done in Pilates are designed to engage the core muscles as a precursor to other exercises. Functional Training
Another training tool of professional athletes is exercise done in functional movement patterns. These exercise are made more challenging by being performed on unstable surfaces or while balancing. Unlike machines, or traditional free weight exercises, functional exercises make the body move in three dimensions. These movements help develop your core strength, balance, agility and power. If you are training for a specific sport, there are functional exercises that mimic the same range of motion of the sport. So the torso rotation of a golf swing, the lateral movement of tennis and the jumping of basketball all have functional exercises associated with them.
